CEP Webinar: Islamism – Bridging the Atlantic Divide

Monday, Dec 14, 2020

On December 14, 2020, CEP hosted a discussion on the unique challenges facing France and other European states, coming from both Islamism and jihadist violence.

The recent spate of jihadist terror attacks in Europe has highlighted concerns over domestic Islamist movements, with French President Emmanuel Macron’s campaign against “Islamist Separatism” garnering considerable attention. Meanwhile, recent comments from U.S. journalists have caused some resentment in France, emphasizing their lack of awareness of the different challenges facing both American and European societies.

Opening remarks:
Lucinda Creighton, CEP Senior Advisor in Europe, Former Irish Minister of State for European Affairs

Moderator:
Liam Duffy, London-based CEP Advisor, author of CEP’s latest report; Gradualists to Jihadists: Islamist Narratives in the West

Speakers:
Caroline Fourest, French commentator, writer, director, and former Charlie Hebdo columnist

Sir John Jenkins, former U.K. Ambassador to Syria, Iraq, Libya, and Saudi Arabia who led the review into the Muslim Brotherhood

Extremists: Their Words. Their Actions.

Fact:

On October 7, 2023, Hamas invaded southern Israel where, in the space of eight hours, hundreds of armed terrorists perpetrated mass crimes of brutality, rape, and torture against men, women and children. In the biggest attack on Jewish life in a single day since the Holocaust, 1,200 were killed, and 251 were taken hostage into Gaza—where 101 remain. One year on, antisemitic incidents have increased by record numbers.
